The Cornish Santa, with the Celtic name of “Tas Nadelik”, embodies the spirit of the Cornish people. While the miners worked endless days underground in the dark, dirty mines, the Cornish Santa, dressed in pure white, seems to be beckoning to the miners, “Come with me and let’s walk in the fresh air along the Cornish coastline.” Ancient houses, like “The Old Manor House” and “The Harbor Gift Shop” are by his feet while fishing boats bob in the choppy waters. Tas Nadelik’s sack is filled with bits of Cornish culture such as a miner’s lamp and the steam engine invented by Richard Trevithick. The Cornish Chough riding on his shoulder, is a member of the crow family with an orange curved beak, had not bred in Cornwall for 50 years until 2001 when three birds arrived, the beginning of their reintroduction into Cornwall. The cat accompanying Santa represents the legend of the “Mousehole Lights”. The legend is about Mousehole, a small fishing village in West Cornwall with a beautiful harbor. Merry Christmas from Cornwall!
